There is no definitive winner when it comes to the greenest energy supplier in the UK, but there are certainly some worthy companies making a genuine attempt to deliver sustainable energy.

Octopus Energy

Currently selling only electricity, gas and water to business customers, Octopus Energy offers 100% renewable electricity to some 1.5 million UK homes via wind, sun and water. While they don’t offer renewable gas, they carbon offset the gas they do supply.

With almost 30,000 5-star reviews on Trust Pilot, their customer service is amongst the best in the business. In fact, Which recommends them as their top green energy provider year after year.

They are extremely competitive price-wise, offering some of the cheapest tariffs in the UK and no exit fees as standard.

Ecotricity

Ecotricity was one of the pioneers in offering green power to the UK and offers excellent packages for business customers.

These include a dedicated account manager, half-hourly metre readings, and their standard rolling 28-day contract terms.

As the first electricity company to be recognised by the Vegan Society, its ecological credentials are solid. Its aim is full carbon neutrality by 2025.

Orsted

Orsted, formerly known as Dong Energy, is Denmark’s biggest energy company and has been operating in the UK since 2004. Since that time they’ve invested over £4 billion pounds in offshore wind power in the UK with 13 operational offshore wind farms in the UK, providing 6.2GW of renewable electricity. They have also developed a world first bioenergy plant in Northwich, Cheshire, which uses enzymes to convert household waste into green energy.

Orsted provides both renewable electricity fixed-term and variable rate plans. They currently have a 3.2-star rating out of 5 on Trustpilot, based on just under 3000 reviews.

Bulb

Bulb, now run by the Government through Ofgem, offer pricing which tries to match providers of conventionally sourced energy.

With exemplary customer service, hassle-free switching, intuitive app integration, and a single tariff, there is a lot to recommend them.

Oh, and there are no exit fees.

Good Energy

Good Energy stands out from the crowd in its gas offering, to begin with. Most providers of so-called ‘green energy’ offer conventional gas, which they carbon offset. Good Energy has gone further by introducing biogas, meaning they are producing gas from farm waste and other sources. While currently only fulfilling 10% of their quota, this is a positive start.

Good Energy sources its electricity from sunshine, wind, rain and biofuels, and it pays employees fairly. These are just some of the reasons the Good Shopping Guide has named them the most ethical energy employer 3 years in a row.

Who is the Cheapest Green Energy Supplier?

With constantly fluctuating prices, the chances are this will have changed by the time we publish this article.

At the time of writing, however, OutFox the Market offers the cheapest green energy in the UK. If it’s purely the price you’re after, they may be worth calling.

That said, any balanced criteria look at factors beyond simply the lowest possible tariff, and this includes customer service. Alas, Outfox the Market doesn’t excel here nearly as much as some of the most costly providers. In fact, if you analyse their Trust Pilot reviews, it seems that a fairly high percentage of customers (over 20%) label them ‘poor’ or ‘terrible.’

With this in mind, we’d hazard that Bulb is a better choice.

What’s the Best Green Energy Supplier in the UK?

Voted best green energy supplier by Which, Ecoctricity is doing a superb job of combining affordable pricing, outstanding customer service and solid green credentials.

They are entering the green gas market, too, with their new mill at Reading planned to produce enough green gas to supply 4,000 homes.

They have 3.9 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot, out of 4000 reviews, with an overall score of ‘great.’
